The Experience of Daughter-in-laws Living with Parents-in-laws


Abstract
The purpose of the study is to describe the experience of daughter-in-law living with their parents-in-law. Using phenomenological methodology, ten subjects were interviewed by two reachers. In-depth and detailed interviews were stated and recorded in letter.
Parents-in-laws of all subjects were in general healthy condition and no one was severely disabled of injured. All the statements were classified by seven areas of human life which are religious, family/living, social life, psychological, leisure, and financial areas. There after, using classified statements, themes were inferred and categorized. Findings suggest that living with parent-in-law affects everyday life of daughter-in-law in both positive and negative ways.
Categorized themes are indifference, guilty feeling and fear, discomfort, feeling of unfairness, feeling of exhaustion, feeling of obscurity, and feeling of security in relation to the phenomena of living together with parents-in-law. Themes related to solving conflicts are patience, evasion of interaction, ceasing to communicate, demanding, pursuing her own life, ventilation, and investion in herself. Support from a spouse and others, and practical support from other siblings are suggested to be the most effective and crucial matters for the daughter-in-law who lives with parents-in-law.
